Not your typical sentimental ballet, “Sugar Plum Fairy” is about an awkward pre-teen’s quest to be cast as Clara in her ballet school’s rendition of “The Nutcracker,” and the sibling rivalry and maternal expectations that undo her.

When:  Previews Dec. 3-7; regular performances Dec. 9-24.
